I knew I missed something technical like that....NO!
Seems kind of dumb, I can buy him a 747 and gift it to him across State lines but not a handgun.
So you answered that question...
What about long guns and shotguns?

Hypothetically...
What happens if I purchase the LCP here in AZ, then later I decide to move to California and I bring the LCP with me? What happens then? Am I violation of any Calif. law?

I think that you can purchase any non-approved handgun used, just not new. It has to go through an FFL under any circumstances though. I do not know though if when you move here from another state how you are supposed to go about declaring your guns and registering them. I know that you cannot bring certain guns in no way no how, but where does one go to figure it out before they enter the state so they are not in violation? We have an inspection station for produce entering the state but they don't look for guns, not sayin' I want them to start though!
The ironic thing is that I hear Governor Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown is actually a gun enthusiast who goes to the range frequently. I don't know if that is a bunch of crap or not but that is what I have been told.

California Approved Handguns List
Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale
Here's the current California Government website link for approved handguns. I have to admit California is making less and less handguns available for sale. It's on the Sacramento legislators agenda to take away our second amendment rights, little-by-little. Currently (11/17/2012) All Ruger models are not available unless you are law enforcement.

Sturm, Ruger's guns are mostly available, sans the lcp and 1911.

Rufus, after you read all the posts, the answer is now clear.
Gun Laws, especially California's, are crazy.
Share your hobby with as many young people as possible and help to create a new generation of gun enthusiasts that will help change the elected officials.
If any one has a better idea, I would love to hear it.
