My quick five

1. Single action army

2. m1 Garand

3. k98 mauser

4. 1911 .45

5. Ak-47

There may guns that would qualify for this list, but I chose guns that changed the way we look at firearms and what they can do and go throhg. And ones that have stood the test of time.

For instance the k98 mauser changed the bolt action world. It is probroly the most copied and reliable bolt action platform ever made.

Same goes for the other designs, that have stood the test of time and changed our percpetions of what a firearm is.

A good way to judge this question may be, "how long has it served?" How long will it serve.

1911- present, 101 years and still going strong
870- 60 years with no end in sight
BAR- 1918 through Vietnam? (a real man's gun)
The Mauser rifle series, which many bolt action rifles are still based
AK-47 Although an newcomer, it the largest production, and maybe the best battle rifle, ever!

Because I love them, I am adding a 6th. Mosin Nagant 1891- present.

Many or most of new arms Americans are buying now will be relegated to the scrap-pile of history.
