The Associated Press: Utah lawmakers propose M1911 as official state gun

State lawmakers are debating whether to designate a semiautomatic pistol as the official gun of Utah, despite protests from people who believe it's inappropriate because of recent mass shootings.

The bill to make the Browning M1911 the official gun breezed through a committee hearing this week and is scheduled to be debated by the full House as early as Wednesday.

Republican Rep. Carl Wimmer said the state should have the gun as one of its state symbols to honor John Browning, a Utah native who invented it in 1911.

"He invented a firearm that has defended American values and the traditions of this country for 100 years," Wimmer told the House Political Subdivisions Committee.

Utah has 24 state symbols recognizing the history, geography and culture of the state. They include a state cooking pot, a state tree, a state hymn and a state folk dance.

And for The Texas State Firearm, I hereby nominate the 1847 Walker Colt, designed for and by the Texas Rangers!

It's a great idea and it's the perfect year for it. The pistol and J.M.B. have earned the honor many times over. They shouldn't worry about political correctness and just do it.

If anybody wants to get all whiny and self righteous about gun designers because of the Tuscon tragedy, they should be pissed with Gaston Glock anyway.

Even if AZ hadn't happened they should still be pissed at Gaston Glock. :D

I was trying not to go there. ;)

Sorry. I couldn't help myself.

I think this is a great idea and am all for it. From what I have read Utah is a pretty gun friendly state anyways, and we KNOW they are big on tradition there.

Why not have a state gun? Don't they have State Flowers and State bugs & songs?
