Do you get the feeling he's the type of person to do something stupid with it?

A bill of sale holds up in court by providing reasonable doubt to a jury that you still owned it or were up to anything "under the table" that you were not willing to disclose about selling the gun.

But if your guy says this guy isn't supposed to own this gun, then don't Sell it to him.

Don't forget to get signature of the buyer. In MD in might be a good idea to go through an FFL with the transaction.

I don't want to be liable in any way, even though it would basically be his word against mine if something happened. Is there a way I can set up some sort of legal document stating that he purchased the shotgun and thus takes all responsibility for it, or can I not do that since I myself don't have papers for it?
Papers???? Exercise your RIGHTS and do whatever you feel is right to do. If the person who wants the item does not feel right to you don't sell it, otherwise just sell it.

Put a date on it and the city and state where the transfer (sale) took place.

You could also get his finger prints, a blood sample, and a photo of him holding the shotgun, be sure the eyes are in focus for retina scans!

Seriously. When I sell an unregulated firearm face to face in this state, I google the person and give a quick look in Maryland case search just to be sure. I check the guy's ID to make sure it is Maryland and the name I got matches, then I get the cash. I don't have them sign anything, I just keep a note in my own records that I sold firearm XZY, serial number 123, on date, to the name given.

If you have any reason to suspect that this friend is prohibited or intends to do something illegal, don't do it.
