O.k. As far as building a DD individuals can build them as long as they are not also classified as a machinegun also... some 20mm's are automaitic cannons... a friend built a 20mm rifle using a Russian PTRD AT gun the reciever with out the barrel would transfer like any other rifle you could take a breech ring for a 105 howitzer and barrel it as a 22 and it's legal take the same breech ring and put a 105mm barrel on it and you need to do the paper work for building a DD. If you have a reciever or weld up a reciever DO NOT have the barrel that would be constructive intent.

Now black powder cannon... Muzzle loading cannon are not considered DD's and yes they can be rifled, you can build a breech loading cannon that is not a DD, it cannot use fixed ammunition with a primer, that's why people build copies of the Whitworth breech loading rifle, I have a section of 40mm barrel the will become a Whitworth this winter.... hope this helps.

Not arguing, I agree with you----but I'm still a bit curious. If the de-wat
has/had a serial number, and I were to get a DD stamp and then restore it
to function, I'm not at all sure that it wouldn't then be a fully transferable
DD. Might have to do a little checking with the ATF---I've always wanted
a Solothurn. Brings a little tear to my eye every time I see a mid sixties
ad for Solothurn and Lahti 20mm's for $99.
