Default New South Wales - Buy now and show proof -- or pay later!

FYI for those going down under and those living there, carry your receipts on your goods!

Buy now and show proof -- or pay later

MEMO to criminals and everyone else: keep those receipts. Last week the state's “unexplained wealth” law came into effect, to the outrage of civil libertarians and the horror of crooks and their accountants.

Until now the state could confiscate your assets only if it could prove they had been obtained criminally.

This led to horse-trading as authorities demanded a certain amount of assets and crooks agreed to hand over a proportion if there was no further action.

But now the onus of proof has been reversed and cops will be pouncing on real estate, cash, flash cars and bikes, jewellery, spa baths and anything else that catches their eye.

Where the old law could go back only six years, the new one covers assets obtained at any time. Police estimate it will recover $240 million over the next 10 years and half of that will be paid to the victims of crime.

I hope not; however, with this administration - they would do it!

What about items you obtained legally prior to the law going into effect? What if there were no receipts to show (i.e. gifts, inherited items, etc.)?

I have deep respect for Aussies, but you have some of the most stupid-arsed laws anywhere. Why do you keep electing screwed up morons? I thought the U.S. had cornered the market on that pursuit.

The two political parties here are just different cheeks of the same arse; either one is just as bad as the other as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully though at the next State election, the lesser of the two evils will be elected and overturn this (and many other) stupid laws.

I'd be in trouble. I have trouble locating reciepts for stuff I bought last week.
It would fall 5-4 in our current Supreme court.
Sort of turns things on their head doesn't it? There are many things I can't "prove" I purchased legally. That shouldn't make them illegal. Perhaps the burden should be on authorities to prove that something was purchased illegally. I know, that's just crazy talk.
I thought that innocent until proven guilty was a legal concept in Australia as well?

Yeah that used to be true and POSSIBLY still is to a lesser extent (although it's much worse here on the Gold Coast now), but the NSWPS doesn't make the rules anyway, it's the politicians...
