I support having him checked out, based on the information in the article. There may be facts that weren't printed because if they become public, they could guarantee a mistrial, should this go to court.

Maybe so and this is off topic but what you imply with no evidence from the story is that the guy was involved in some sort of straw purchase arrangement. That's a big deal here on the east coast and would get you an orange jump suit and a felony record for your troubles.

I would like to hear the rest of the story on this one. I do think this is the very, very greasy part of a slippery slope & hope the government is wearing proper shoes for the terrain.

I am very glad they called first & didn't just send in the SWAT team. Under similar circumstances (hadn't committed a crime that he was aware of, AFAIK) i'm pretty sure SWAT would've met some resistance coming in my house unannounced, especially considering that fairly recent home invasion robbery involving crooks imitating a police entry team of some kind. That could only turn out badly.

In all honesty and frankness, this does make me want to keep any firearm purchases i LEGALLY can off the books, so to speak. Of course, i like the feel of used firearms better anyway personally.

So it appears this was a huge violation of civil rights.
He got laid off, he picked up five guns he had been eying up when his income tax return showed up.
Then had the SWAT team knock on his door and threw him into custody for mental evaluation.

Sorry taxpayers, but I hope he gets $$$ rich, and buys some more firearms.

100% agreed, he deserves to get as much money as his lawyer can get him.

My opinion hasn't changed. To jump all over the PD without all the facts is piss poor reporting.

Get the FULL story, then put it out there.

Sorry guys, I'm still not satisfied and am still missing a bunch of information:

1. How did the PD get involved? They don’t' just pick an address out of the phone book and call out two swat teams.

2. How did they know about the guns he bought? Who told the police?

3. Are the police responsible if they act on information they receive that is perceived as credible? Again, who told the police and what exactly did they say?

4. I also googled both the author of the story and the lawyer giving the guy advise, both are, in my opinion from my quick research, sensation seekers publicity hounds for their own agenda so I will take the article “the rest of the story” with a grain of salt.

5. I’m a little curious about his mandates before he came out

a. No handcuffs.
b. Not to be taken off his property.
c. No mental evaluation.

Handcuffs I can see I guess, not to be taken off property is kind of funny in my book as most people would want to know what is happening and why. The no mental evaluation thing sets off my spydie sense, who the hell says that?

So nope I still think there is a whole lot missing before I’ll take the stand that the police really screwed the pooch.

I think this was a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'm sure there was quite a bit of monitoring done by the the police agency involved here and they felt they had an obligation to protect the public, which is what they though they were doing.

However, I do see the other side of the coin. In our trade we get laid off at certain times throughout a project in order to let other trades catch up and vise versa. Sometimes this cycles several times during a bigger job. I can tell you that more than a few of the guns in my safe were bought during a layoff. If you save money or work on the side it becomes a perfect time to invest in a firearm and get to know it. Lots of range time. . .

WTF! Was it Tom Cruise and the Pre-Crime Division that raided his house? This is a total load of crap. Is there a single member of this forum that wouldn't be on the phone with the ACLU and the NRA by the end of business? He has committed no crime, has not been proven to be mentally unstable, and yet they raid his house and seize his recently purchased guns? This is a gross violation of this man's rights. I am very uncomfortable. I just got laid off. I just bought a gun. I have no intention of killing anyone. It actually made me feel better, and gave me something to look forward to. Plus I have free time, so the range is constructive and fun, plus a great outlet for stress. You know what isn't a great outlet for stress.....if someone came in my house and arrested me for no reason and essentially stole my $1000 pistol. That is the kind of thing that makes you want to shoot somebody. This is a very dangerous precedent, and I hope it is dealt with correctly.
