Dunno if its true or not....but in my experience after debating with antigunners (More than a doz to my credit) and breaking down their wrongly held views, the final nail in the coffin is challenging them to a day at the range.
When the antigunner accepts the challenge, you KNOW you have a new born shooter or "pro gunner". You take them to the range and you go over safety, safe operation, safe handling etc etc and you just plink w/ 22's.
Former anti gunner falls in love with shooting and the rest is history.
I have a proven system and track record....its does NOT happen over night. But with persistence it can be achieved.
