Default Firearm Owners Protection Act 1986 (Machine Gun Ban)

Alright folks, I'm pretty sure this is the place to talk about this.

In my English Comp. II class we have been assigned to right a position paper and I chose to write my paper about the machine gun ban.

I am working on the claim that "FOPA should be revised to allow U.S. citizens to purchase fully automatic firearms manufactured after May, 1986."

Problem is...after three days of research, I haven't found any sources that the professor would call "reputable."

I am asking those of you who read up on this stuff regularly for some help in finding reputable articles/sources with solid information about FOPA and machine guns.

Will take suggestions on the claim as well.

Thanks,
-Tim

Gun facts v. 6.0 by Guy Smith is packed full of references and stats. I'd start my dig there.

In the beginning of WW2, the Brits came to us asking citizens to donate guns to arm their home guard.

American citizens donated guns and armed the Brits quite well.

If the Brits had been allowed to own guns, that would not have been necessary.

Send an E-mail to the National Rifle Association for the actual references./

Start by defining what your professor considers "reputable" . If he's going to "rule out" such sources as the NRA, the FBI UCR etc then you're paddling upstream against a rapids. FWIW, the "crime rate" - per several industry and fed sources - for legally owned/registered full auto weapons is vanishingly small, ( Like the third digit after two zeros and a decimal point !).

NRA and FBI would be fine.

basically it can't be something written from the point of view of someone who has little knowledge of the subject (newspaper) or someone who is not qualified (other students, international articles) etc. etc.

And yea, I had seen somewhere that the amount of murders committed with legally owne full-auto firearms since 1934 was 2...One by a police officer, and one by a man who didn't even know his weapon was full-auto capable..

here is some good reading/info material - http://www.gunsandcrime.org/suter-fa.html

I would also suggest the NRA and FBI for facts/stats/research material

Thank you.

in return, here is a petition to allow citizens to purchase full auto firearms made after 1986.
