Where I grew up in Missouri the democrats were by and large more conservative than about 4/5 of the republicans are now.

I am not an Obama fan but Obama did not mandate that you take a test in order to own a gun in California. No one in the federal gov't had anything to do with that: The citizens of California did that by electing anti-gun political hacks from both partys. It is true that the Democrat party in CA has lead in gun control but the Republicans got in their licks too. In 1967 CA governor Ronald Reagan and the anti-gun legislature got scared; the result was the purtid Mulford Act that banned the carry of loaded guns in public. President Ronald Reagan banned carry in national parks: This was reversed by Obama when our OK senator Coburn attached a rider to the credit card bill.

During the Rodney King riots Republican governor Pete Wilson outlawed the sale of guns and ammo. Then there is that fine "con-servative" governor, Ahnold the Actor.
