How effective at doing what? Making people late, probably VERY effective. Pissing people off, VERY effective. Wasting taxpayer money? VERY effective. Catching anything useful? Maybe not so much.

I thin its legit for them to ask you if you are a citizen.. Since as a citizen the Bill of Rights applies to you.
Only a citizen can invoke his 4th amendment rights so saying and perhaps even demonstrating u r a citizen is not unreasonable in and of itself.

If I'm not mistaken, only my birth certificate & passport say I'm a citizen. (Or does that come up on a DL check?) If not, I should have to carry my BC or passport everywhere I go?

I winter in Arizona. Southern highways have these checkpoints.
I have often been waved through without a question.

I think the most I have had to say is "Yes"

I look like an ugly old redneck in a red jeep. My wife is beautiful. We look like Snowbirders and don't get much attention

I don't think that the DHS of the BATFE could find their own rear ends with both hands and a flashlight. You're always hearing of some blunder by one or the other.

If you guy's have never lived or traveled in a southern border state, you just don't understand what the checkpoints are actually for.
Here in Texas, they bust many drug smuggler's and also human trafficker's away from the border at these checkpoints. They also use drug sniffing dogs, X-ray machines, and other ways to catch these criminals.
While some may think it is a big deal, most of us from these states see it as a small inconvenience, and that's about it.

I've always pissed them off whenever they ask me what my citizenship is. I'm a Texan, when they argue with me,I then ask to see their Green cards, since 99.9% of them are hispanic. They usually just tell me to Go,but I have been delayed a couple times by one's that don't have a sense of humor.

So stopping everybody is the way to stop drug smugglers. Hell we have drug smugglers up here too but I'll be damned if I want to be stopped. It's just another way to get the camel's nose under the tent. I'm just tired of the same old BS that it's for our safety. That's the same excuse they gave us for gun control. Look how well that's working for us.

Sure could. But not in a PC way. There is a town near where I live. It's a tiny town. It's also a know route for Heroin to come out of Mass, heading north. There has NEVER once, to the best of my knowledge, been a checkpoint anywhere near here to catch drugs. The smugglers would simply figure out where the checkpoint is, and go around. I bet it's the same down south.
