I think the family of the victim should decide his fate. Horrible, long, painful gruesome death; their choice. Life sentence; their choice. 230 grains to the fatal triangle; their choice. I also think if they can't or won't take a life, they should be able to designate someone or the state to carry out their wishes.
Nothing can bring back a murder victim, everything after the fact should be left up to the family to do what makes them feel best. Only exception I would give would be if the family decides freedom for the dirt bag. That would be a big no-go as far as I'm concerned.
