Default Countdown to Illinois CCW

On 11-Dec-2012, the Seventh Circuit court overturned the Illinois law making it illegal to carry a loaded gun in public. They gave Illinois 180 days to take corrective action. If they take no action within that time, then the law making public carry is void and so public carry (without a license!) would become legal.

Since the Mayan calendar didn't seem to work out quite right, I referred to a modern calendar and found that CC-day for Illinois would be 9-Jun-2013. As of today that is 160 days away.

Let the countdown continue!

Even if open carry becomes legal, do not expect doing it without consequences. I have read articles about open carry in Wisconsin not going all that well. The story usually goes that some citizen sees a guy carrying and gets so worked up that they call the police. Cops show up and bust the gun owner for creating a public disturbance. Just by walking around with a gun in a holster.

Personally, I would never open carry. It just isn't my "thing".

Maby then I would feel ok with going to Illinois for vacation if I can take my firearm with me. Will have to see if Chicago tries to make there own laws regarding carry concealed.

If you read further you will find that when these ignorant LEO's violate the rights of the people in such ways their respective law enforcement agencies have been successfully sued into the thousands of dollars for violating the rights of the law abiding citizens. Our attorney general has also issued warnings to LE agencies that this sort of thing is not to be tolerated.

I sure hope it happens but part of me still says "no way". I guess we'll wait and see how difficult they make it. Fingures crossed.

Open carry was made legal in Oklahoma in March, but the effective date was Nov-1 to allow training of LEOs to handle the new situations. On Nov-1 I carried openly, just for the joy of it. I bought myself one of those travel lanyards so that I could have my carry permit displayed where I would NOT have to reach into a pocket to retrieve it. I was expecting the LEOs to be deluged with the "OMG he's got a gun!!!" calls. Nobody even looked twice at me. OWB was so much more comfortable that I continued to open carry most of the time. About 3 weeks later someone actually noticed and said "You're the first person I've seen open carrying."

The revised Oklahoma statutes also made it illegal for any county, city, town, village, hamlet, etc. to pass a law making carrying a licensed firearm a public disturbance or any other such action.

Of course Oklahoma already had concealed carry for a number of years before open carry passed. So, the public had time to get used to people with guns. Not hard to imagine massive culture shock in Illinois if they went from "no carry" to "uncontrolled open carry" on 9-Jun-2013.

Surely Illinois will pass some legislation. But if the legislation continues to deny any public carry, the new legislation will be just as unconstitutional as the previous one. I don't know what the Seventh Circuit Court would say about such a flagrant disobedience of the court ruling.
