Confronted by an Idiot...

Yesterday, Sunday, I popped into my local QFC looking for empty boxes because I'm helping my mother move into assisted living.

The produce clerk was kind enough to escort me toward the stock room to check but as we rounded an aisle, a rather "rotund" young woman, I'd say 30 or so...says is a very snarky voice...

"Excuse me sir, but I find your hat to be in VERY poor taste given what just happened in Colorado!"

Honestly, I was stunned for a moment by her vitriol as I realized I'd grabbed my gun club hat which happens to have a large bolt action rifle emblazoned across the front.

As those of you who know me can imagine, I recovered quickly and replied...

"Sweetheart, given your waistline, I'd be more worried about that cart full of Ding Dongs than anything I'm wearing". ;)

The poor clerk could not help himself and was in tears by the time we reached the stockroom...:D

I know, I know, I should have been prepared to calmly and professionally explain the flaws in her emotional logic but I ask...is there really any value in arguing with idiots? Or is our energy better spent entertaining a fence sitter at an idiots expense?

Thoughts?

Tack

I learned long ago that arguing with an idiot is a useless effort. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Personally I thought your answer was perfect.

Thanks John...

As the clerk and I came back up front with arm loads of boxes she was speaking LOUDLY with the manager and gesturing quite dramatically...

I think the part that surprised me the most was the location. I was in QFC for gods sake. I though people like her all shopped at Wal Mart?

It wasn't much of an argument...more of a verbal slap down with her standing there mouth agape while the clerk and I continued to the stockroom...him trying to contain his laughter until we got through the doors.

I don't think we even broke our stride...;)

Well done Tack! But man you could have went somewhere with that. You should have went on the offense and informed here that those ding dongs were just as deadly to her health as anything in the world and told her you were spearheading a group to restrict the sale of such things with the hopes they'd be completely outlawed someday.

Haha...yeah, that would have been good but I think Mayor Boobburg out in NY City already has that threat covered... :)
