Nitestalker-
The law you liked to is a STATE law from Louisiana, not federal law.
The original serial number can be legally reapplied, making the gun legal. It may be misconstrued as illegal (look at the posts here!) and you may have to prove the legality. Whether the gun is worth this is up to you. Under federal law, serial numbers can be removed and reapplied during the course of normal refinishing, etc. I say this having experience with BATF in the matter some years ago.

Keep in mind there are a lot of guns out there without serial numbers and never had them. They were not required on some arms until some time in the 60's. Those guns are perfectly legal. It is not illegal to own a gun with no serial number but it is a crime to remove a serial number or possess one that has had the serial number removed.

On rare occasion ATF will grant permision to reapply a S/N or issue a new one. A friend had a gun stolen, serial number ground off. He had his Driver's License number applied under the grips so ATF allowed the re-application of the origiinal number.

You must go through ATF. Given the circumstances, I doubt they will allow it.

Technically guns with out serial number are Contraband. Their was an Amnesty declared in 1968. All firearms without serial numbers were allowed to apply for a number that had to be stamped by an FFL and registered. This law has never been rescinded and they are not legal under Federal Law. The BATFE can prosecute ownership of these arms if they want to.

Very true. The BATFE does not view ownership of these guns as legal. They more often confiscate these non-numbered firearms. I have never known of a case where they allowed replacement of a number.

until the GCA of 1968, a lot of cheap or inexpensive firearms didn't have serial numbers because they were not required. but even if the firearm was made before 1968, and it had a serial number, destroying that serial number is a federal crime. after 1968, every firearm had better have had a serial number from the factory, regardless of it's cost or value to be legal.

Personally, I'd either turn in the gun to law enforcement, or completely disassemble it and take a cutting torch to the frame (and throw it into the deepest part of the closest lake). After that, you could either sell off the parts, or buy a new frame for them.

OP should even have the papers and original serial.

Perhaps the friend was in the middle of refinishing it?

I guess 'we' fear the government. Something just isn't right about that.
