They simply could not count on enough Dem votes for it to pass the full Senate so Reid has dropped it from the main bill. It will be put forward as an amendment to the bill when the bill is on the floor, but one analysis I've read (which sounds dead-on) is that Reid is doing that to give the red state Dems who will be in contested elections in 2014 some cover. It will allow them to actually vote against the amendment, then they can claim during the next election they voted against the AWB.

Besides, even if it passed the Senate their's not a chance in h*ll it would pass the House. It's dead this time around, now we can focus on the remaining bill and the upcoming UN treaty fight.

You're right: I thought it was overkill so didn't include that this high crimes and misdemeanors commiting President said, on the same subject, that if Congress didn't act that he would (implying use of over-reaching Executive Orders). Still might...

I think this was their plan all along. To raise an issue that seemed huge so they could slip something else through. Whatever they pass federally is what they wanted to pass all along. It's their strategy, distraction.

Today diane fiensteins bill was shot down by Harry Reid... he told her that the awb and high capacity magazine bill would not be included in the gun bills that go to the floor in the senate in April...

way to go Harry and the NRA..GOA...USCCA.. and all those Americans that have fought with phone calls and emails and letters to your legislation... keep up the good work our fight isn't over...

Be wary of the crocodile tears associated with the “killing” of Diane Feinstein’s expansive and unconstitutional assault weapon’s ban. Harry Reid dropped the bill because he knew that if it was attached to the other gun control legislation his statist party hopes to pass, it would doom that legislation as well.

By separating Feinstein’s language, his other gun control bills stand a better chance as a package, and she has the opportunity to attempt to attach her ban to popular legislation as an amendment, making it more likely of passage, not less.

This is not a victory for our side. It’s only a Democratic attempt to change the rules of a game they were certain to lose.

I wish that the bill would have went to the house and be shot down altogether. Now it can come back as an amendment. It can even come back as a new bill after the 2014 elections. This was only done so the Dems would not get a bad name for election time. If the house or the senate or both get a majority in 2014 we are in real trouble. Pray that the Repiblicans keep the house and take control of the senate. Then we may see some progress in this country. If not watch out and we are going to be emptying our bank accounts to fund them confinscating out posessions.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Obama threatened gun control while Americans starved.

Just wanted to pop in and say "called it!" :P . Of course this isn't the end of the war, just a break in the current battle. No guard can ever be dropped...ever.

But yeah.... saw it coming. Evil may be evil but idiots are stills idiots.

When the tiger's in your face the rat is eating all your food. They've been nibbling away at gun rights for years behind a lot of rhetoric about gun bans and 2A repeals. It's less noticable when they do it by erosion. The "failure" of their diversion is the victory we perceive, the intentional blind meant to cover the real objective.

No, it's not over. It never is.
