The term originated from the StG 44 Sturmgewehr, or storm (assault) rifle. It had a select fire to combine some of the characteristics of a bolt action infantry rifle with some of the characteristics of a submachine gun. The rifle round had more range than a sub gun, while still being able to lay down suppressive fire, making the best compromise possible between the two.
