The reason why I asked I got in a debate with a liberal and his definition was "any weapon that can used to assault someone" so I asked him "would you want to carry crayons instead of ink pens because someone could stab you with one " at that point it would be a assault weapon. He turned around and left.

^ Agreed!!! My gun has been sitting on my desk with me since I got home and was in my fanny pack while I was out all day and it didn't shoot anyone.

On that same thought I could assault someone with a pencil. Shall the government ban pencils? Barack Hussein Obama assaults The Constitution just about every time he opens his mouth. Let's ban him from speaking for America in November.

Good point.

I guess my hands are assault weapons under his definition... You don't "assault someone" with a gun, he's an idiot.

The term is to describe a weapon that is used to 'assault' a position, full auto fire is involved. an M14s, Garands and SKSs aren't assault weapons, under the 'worst' term being 'battle rifles' of an era gone by.

What's the difference between an (semi auto) AK and an SKS? Nothing.

Angriffgewehr = assault rifle
Its a very bad translation and only kinda comes close.

What JD said...There is no such animal as an "assault weapon"...Same as the 'snipe' or 'widget'...is simply does not exist...

The term 'assault rifle' was coined by the US military to describe a rifle capable of select fire...semi-auto or full auto. It has nothing to do with collapsible stocks, hi cap mags, or any other tripe the uninformed masses harp on and on about incessantly in the news...

Assault is a behavior...

I could be wrong, but I thought the term was coined about the time the Germans first developed them. It refers to the design being more compact than a full sized battle rifle. It also denotes using a slightly less powerful round, so that troops could carry more ammo. The Sturmgewehr 44 was considered the first assault rifle, "Sturmgewehr" literally means to storm or to assault a position

I think I DO have an "assault rifle" back in the safe. It is a 3 band Enfield rifled musket- with bayonet.

If anyone doubts that they could be used in an "assault" of a position, inquire among the ghosts at Cold Harbor, or a dozen other battlefields.

Fot people that tell me how evil firearms are, I ask how long they have had this phobia about inanimate objects, and if they are getting treatment for it.

As pointed out "Assault rifle" is the original WWII translation of the German sturmgewehr or "storm gun". A mid-sized weapon with lots of firepower to overwhelm the enemy during a frontal attack. Storm or assault being the action during which the weapon is used so in other words, storming or assaulting the enemy position.

By the definitions used in this thread I will disappointed to ever see the terms hunting rifle, target rifle or even sporting rifle, since the weapon itself is incapable of the specified action without human input (and certainly fishing pole should be banned) and yes I'm being sarcastic

OK everybody calm down, I DO NOT support gun control but if I, a gun owner, can come to that conclusion it seems very likely that a non-gun owner could make that leap when shown a military style firearm used to commit a crime. I can easliy see why the "uninformed masses" see no reason for the gun owners to have access to that type of firearm. Do I feel better knowing or arguing the "real" definition, nope not in the slightest because the media will never listen to us, they need to attract viewers and that is done with inflammatory statements not the truth.

We need to look at the real opposition, not the "anti-gun" people but the general public who don't have an opinion until a tragedy occurs and then their fear will tend to push them toward ban/controls. If we, as gun owners, try for a moment to understand the other side I think we can fight a better fight. I think if we spend time arguing the symantics we lose the message about, not just our 2A "rights"(which are meaningless to many), the principles that founded this country and ALL the freedoms we have but could be lost to those who hold the power of fear.

BTW A snipe is bird. wikipedia.org Snipe

Assault Rifle is a term made by people that want to make you scared of them. With the right motivation any rifle anyone owns can be used as an assault rifle. Not jsut those skeery Black Rifles that the media keeps calling assault weapons. It's a tool being used by peopel that wish to modify the laws of the land so that the people will be even more unbalanced by some of the very people that law was written to defend against if need be.

Wow that's a long people-ly run on sentence

Just use the military definition.

They define an "assault rifle" as a short, lightweight, selective fire rifle or carbine, designed to fire an intermediate power cartridge.

Semi-automatics do not qualify as assault weapons by military definition.
