I agree with your sentiment, but there has to be a caveat. Anyone who has been diagnosed with such a condition should self-regulate (I personally would choose not to have a gun if I thought I might lose control). But the flip side is, they can't use their condition as an excuse or get-out-of-jail-by-going-to-the-hospital card if they commit a crime with a weapon.
Psychiatric diagnosis are voodoo science, nothing is black and white and many conditions fall somewhere on a scale from a minor issue to bat guano crazy. If a person is a big enough threat to themselves or others that they are committed, THEN they won't have access to guns. Once they are released, however...
