Air rifles as a hedge against new firearms and ammo restrictions???
OK, the only air rifle i have is .177 break action Daisy. It is heck on squirrels, but i wouldn't want to try it on anything larger (though a buddy shot a possum in the posterior with acceptable results).
I am wondering about the use of larger caliber air rifles as a way around restrictions on buying ammunition or conventional rifles. I understand there are air rifles of calibers/FPS sufficient for taking deer and wild hogs. Air rifles don't require an FFL or paperwork to purchase, and their ammunition doesn't contain explosives, so i would think they would be much harder to restrict to consumers.
I am wondering about the projectiles for these rifles and the complexity of their construction. Could i reasonably mold my own projectiles?
Opinions? Information? Heckling?

Dont be too sure about no restrictions. England has some severe restrictions on power. I have a 22 caliber that would take small game like bunnies. Air rifles are very ammo sensitive.

That is my main concern: If i were to buy a nice air rifle now, could i mold my own ammo later in more restricted times?
That is one nice thing about my muzzleloader; i have a mold to make projectiles and have seen some recipes for powder that seem workable.

Even with their top loading it is only in the 38 special handgun ballistic range. If you are going to spring for the $1350 price tag, just buy a bunch of the bullets(at about a dollar each). Plus the hand pump at $200. Or just use your muzzle loaders.

I have a 177 Crosman Phantom. It has been tested by a Sheriffs Dept chrono it's real consistent at 1040 fps. It cost less than $100 and 500 pellets are about the same size as can of skoal. The only thing I did to it was rebuild the air cylinder with transmission quality rubber parts.
If you are worried about martial law and all that I would invest in a quality muzzle loader. One good 50 cal shot is better than no good shots.

Guys,
please stop this discussion! Why?
One reason has already been mentioned. Great Britain!
Another reason is Germany.
Anti Firearm groups always argue, that you don`t need big bore firearms to perform shooting as a sport. You can shoot airrifels or even better laser rifles.
And when gun owners take in consideration, that an airrifle could replace some other firearm, for what ever reason, you are giving the antis all the arguments to use against you and to take away your guns or restrict you more.
Just have a close look at Germany and Britain.

If you are thinking of something to take deer, look at a crossbow. It would be half the cost of a top end air rifle and the bolts are reusable.

I have a crossman break over. I like it enough, but I would not buy another. I could buy a 22 and a few bricks of ammo for it cost.

Gotta have a doctor's note for a crossbow in MS, for hunting animals legally, anyway. BIL has one; he has a bad eye.
SHTF, i'd rather have a simpler bow.
