Default Able to purchase!?

Hi, i have recently become interested in purchasing my first handgun, but i unfortunately was charged with a misdemeanor assault a few years ago in michigan. I have never had anything else on my record. Am i able to receive my purchase permit?

Check your State laws for a definitive answer

IIRC, at least in NC if you were convicted, no. It's the "assault" part of misdemeanor that get you.

The short answer is no, if assault is on your record than you are denied a purchase permit through the federal system, the state of Michigan has nothing to do with the denial, however if the charge happened to be dropped by the local court system after completing probation or if you petition the court to have it dismissed you could then have your record of an assault sealed and given your rights to own a gun restored.

Not just any assault. It must be a domestic violence assault to disqualify you.

Talk to a local attorney.
