Several months ago I changed bullets that I was using, the new ones are a 64 gr. PSP bonded boat tail bullet by Speer. I'm in the process now of the final stages of fine tuning the Mini, scope and load. Formerly I was using a 65 gr. Spitzer Boat Tail bullet by Sierra, LC or RORG brass, WSR primers , and 25.5 gr.'s of H4895, loaded to a COAL of 2.235+/-. I got great results from this load, but there was very little weight retention with the Sierra bullets for hunting. With the PSP 64 gr. Bonded bullets there is about 95 % weight retention. Test fired both into 5 soggy telephone books at 100 yards. Penetration with the PSP bullets was about 1-1/2 inches more that the Sierra bullets. Just for kicks, I shot 50 rounds at 200 yards, (PSP) and was amazed at the groups I got. (3-3.5 in.) I'm fortunate enough to be able to go to our gun club weekly, if I can tolerate the 100+ temp. and the afternoon wind, which has been very bad lately.
Plan on going to the range this coming Monday, 7/9.
Nice set-up. I can't wait to see the results.

Question Question????

in a long lost forum, the posters (like steve4102) were always trying to create opportunities to get out and shoot and share. it made it a fun and active forum! i'm posting my first shooting challenge to the mini owners on this forum. my first challenge will be easy(ish), so i hope everyone with a mini gives it a crack!

*ALL CHALLENGES ARE SHOOTER'S HONOR*

THE RULES OF CHALLENGE #1:

1) any mini 14 or 30 is allowed. any mods are fine, but must be listed when you submit your targets. also mention ammo, etc. these details could help us all.

2) targets must be shot at a true 100 yards (edit: IF the shooter is using ANY optics).
edit:targets may be shot at 50 yards ONLY if using IRONS

3) target size must be 2". any 2" target measured will work. size of overall target may be larger, as long as the bull equals 2".

HOW TO BEAT THE CHALLENGE: the shooter must shoot 5 shot groups. to beat the challenge, the shooter must put all 5 shots into or touching the 2" target on 2 separate targets. if the shooter misses 1 or more shots out of the 5 shot group, they must start over with a new target. once the shooter has 2 separate 5 shot groups within or touching their 2 inch targets, they beat the challenge! the shooter must then post pics of the targets AND disclose how many attempts it took to get the two targets. remember, it must be at 100 yards or 50 for irons.

*IF you are shooting a TARGET model, you must have all the shoots completely WITHIN the 2", touching is not good enough (hey, its the target model after all)*

IF YOU ATTEMPT THE CHALLEGE: i will ask for all involved to help me on this. if you say you're in on this challenge, help me out. everyone who attempts the challenge and fails will receive a "LIKE" from someone else in the challenge. PLEASE give 1 "LIKE" ONLY for an attempt. however, to get your like, you MUST post pics of your targets and talk about your attempt.

IF YOU BEAT THIS CHALLENGE: again, i will need everyone's help on this. after posting the pics of the 2 5 shot targets required, then you will have beat the first challenge. ANYONE who beats the challenge should receive a "LIKE" from EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE CHALLENGE (and anyone else who wants to like it i suppose). so, they could get maybe 5-15 likes for their accomplishment.

sorry this was a bit long winded. if i missed anything or something is unclear...please ask. if we get good participation and a lot of mini shooters busting up this challenge, we will step up the difficulty next time.

if you want to be a part of this challenge, just reply with an "I'M IN," and get to the shooting part when you can.

so.....what do ya say? wanna do some shooting?
hawkguy, How about a status report, like monthly, : how many attempts, how many beat the challenge!!

Well Hawk posted in one of my threads asking why don't I give this a try so when the rain stops and the heat lets up and the tic population here starts to dwindle a bit i might just have to give this a go.

In other words: "I'm in"!

I kind of dig the fact this is the most active topic in the mini-14 section.

for me, this has been the "summer of shooting."

i normally get out to the range once every other month or so. i have been 3 times in the last four weeks!

my excuse this time.... 12 year old nephew visiting that always begs to shoot guns! guess which gun he really wanted me to bring?

had a great day. spent some time getting a scope i bought for his marlin 60 zeroed in. i must say i was quite impressed with that little gun's accuracy, and we spent more time shooting it than the mini. put some rounds through the 22/45 as well.

good day for the mini though. took another stab at the scope challenge. i had no paper to print the somewhat "offical targets" today, so i went with 2" spots. 1, 2, 3 (miss) on the first attempt. i didn't finish that group. but i got my 2nd 5 shot group on my second attempt today. a nice little group that measured sub 1.5"

here's my 2 targets. took me 5 true attempts, so i guess i went 2 for 5 on the challenge with the scope.

still 0 for 3 on irons

i'll have to re-visit irons at a later date, so this ain't over yet.

Red face No shooting for me today!!!

Sorry, but no shooting for me today. I can take the heat, but 113 degrees is pushing it for this old man. I also have to admit, I had a SENIOR MOMENT when loading everything into my van this morning as I prepared to go to work. We all know the feeling of having forgot something but can't quite put a finger on it!! Ths nagged me for the first two hours of work. Well a light bulb went off in my 74 year old brain, "Dummy, you left the 2 50 round boxes of ammo that you reloaded last evening, sitting on the coffee table in the livingroom." Well, at least I admitted it. Next opening for me to go will be Friday morning, 7-13.
