Pierced Primers in Mini 14

dear friends,
need your help for a little moment.
i own a ruger mini 14 ranch rifle 195 prefix, made in the middle of 1998.
i'm the first owner and own it from 1999 on.
it always performed very well, never had any issues.

in the last time i encounter some probs with penetrated primers. all factory loads, PMC and Sellier&Bellot, no reloaded ammo.

every 20 or so rds i have a cartridge on which the primer seems to be penetrated by the firing pin and after the round is fired there is more smoke than usual coming out of the bolt. still the gun performs perfect, no issues at all.

the only thing i changed the last weeks is a stronger xtra power wolff recoil spring an 2 wilson combat 1911 buffers on front and rear of the spring guide rod/gas pipe.

i can't see how that changes have an effect on the primers.

is it a ammo related problem, a firing pin related problem, too strong hammer spring (factory spec)?

best regards
dusty

Do you have a point or burr on the tip of your pin?

dusty_dragon 09-16-2012 11:08 PM

burr on lower half of the tip

Have a smithy file it for you.

dusty_dragon 09-16-2012 11:15 PM

yes sir, think that's the problem, gonna see a smithy, thanks.

do you think it got anything to do with the installed buffer(s) and xtra power spring, or is it just pure chance?

just can't think about what the buffers and xtra recoil spring could have to do with the FP and it's burr.

I think your fp is just showing its age

roger that, just another question, if you don't mind:

I am concerned that the shock buff at the gas block / pipe will decrease the amount of travel of the slide handle, causing the bolt to unlock prematurely. There is an amount of play in the system, the slide assy has enough play and the bolt cycles not before a little bit of backwards movement of the slide assy

do you think all is fine, or will the bolt unlock prematurely?

Id have to see it. Best bet is to let your smithy go over it

dusty_dragon 09-16-2012 11:39 PM

okay, thanks.

do you have any clue if the xtra power recoil spring (due to longer locking time) increases gas pressure on the breech face of the bolt and the FP?

tacticalfun 09-16-2012 11:44 PM

Your pressure shouldnt increase.
