You have to look and see if your rifle says ranch stamped on the back of the receiver. They made a standard model with no scope mounts on the receiver as well as the ranch model with mounts. I have a standard 196 and use a B-Square side mount.

Not necessarily. The 196 series includes both Mini-14's and Ranch Rifles. He described the rear sight as being similar to a Garand, instead of a folding leaf, so it's sounds like he has a Mini-14.

it says nothing about Ranch rifle, number is 196-29xxx ugly birch slabsided stock and black plastic upper hand guard. stock is too short for comfortable shooting benched it @200 yds w/irons and the cheap Herter's steel case ammo. I was surprised that after 5 familiarization shots all shots in the next 10 would have been on torso or head. trigger is heavy and rough/creepy. looks like its got the makings of a good rifle to me.

Best/cheapest source for the BSquare mount? how would you mount a LER "scout style" scope rail on one?

going to start checking the hand load situation soon too. will the faster twist work better with the 62/4 gr bullets than the 50's?

You will have to shop around for the best price on the B-Sqare but Brownell's is decent. The scout style mounts are easy to mount, they take the place of the hand guard and upper half of the gas block.

You will have to test the loads and bullet weights to see which shoots best out of your gun.
