Mini14 and ammo

Hunting for a mini14 but I want to use both .223 and 5.56. Do 180 series handle both or just the 580 series. Visiting big5 they sell only the .223 versions which are 580 series. Just looking for the rules so I can narrow my search.

They ALL will shoot both except for the Target model. All but the newest Mini's are marked .223 on the receiver, but have a 5.56mm chamber, so are fine with either. the target model is the only one that should shoot only .223.

I just put some milsurp through my 580 and it shot just fine. Pretty accurate too.

never thought there was a difference but if I am reading things correct the 5.56 is the same cartridge and all but just a hotter round , more pressure ?

Not just hotter but 5.56mm also requires a longer throat (freebore) to keep pressures from being excessive. .223 chambers have a shorter throat and steeper onset of the rifling to help accuracy, 5.56mm has a longer throat (area before the rifling starts) and a more gradual onset of rifling to keep pressures down with longer bullets such as the tracer round, reliability being above tack driving accuracy for the military usage..

That may be but my AR, MVP and Mini 580 are plenty accurate.

Has anyone tried the new Wolf Gold , brass cased boxer primed suppose to be made by Fiocci in Tiwan (not real certain)

FYI...I now own TWO mini 14's, one tactical, the other the ranch rifle. Love em both. Very accurate & a pleasure to shoot! Throw a 90 round drum mag on the tactical & it shoots flawlessly!

Wolf Gold is made by Prvi Partisan. Prvi labeled ammo will cost 1/3 less for the same cartridge. PMC Bronze is fairly inexpensive.

Prvi Partisan is very good ammo. I shoot mostly Prvi in .303 and their soft points have put six mule deer and two elk in the freezer. All were one shot kills and the bullets hit right where I aimed.
