The Mini is right there on the same page. Here's its specs: Ruger® Mini-14® Ranch Rifle Autoloading Rifle Model 5814

Whacked a whitetail doe at 130 yards last winter with a mini-14 in the 6.8. Dropped her in her tracks. Have a compact Burris Timberline scope on the mini, makes a nice little deer rifle. Just don't forget to chamber the first round smartly or you will just here a click when you pull the trigger. A lesson learned the hard way, scared my first intended target halfway to the next county, when I tried to chamber the next round.

The 7.62x39 Russian is loaded with a .310-.311 bullet. I have been checking it out as I just picked up a Mini 30. The new Hornady steel match is .310 as are the Russian rounds I have measured. Trying to get my hands on some other US mfg to check bullet size. The Mini 14 rifles were never meant to be long range. If you want 300 yards +, get a good bolt action in a decent caliber.

I have had a Mini 14 in 6.8 for two years now. They were not brand new from Ruger when I bought mine. I love it. It is a very comfortable shooter and accurate as I am. The newer minis, especially the 6.8 have thicker barrels and don't suffer from all of the inaccuracies of the earlier models. As someone else said, in Colorado and many other states you cannot legally hunt deer with a .223 or any other .22 caliber rifle.
