The 580 Series Mini's are considerably more accurate out of the box than the older models. To me, there was no comparison between the old model and the new ones.

If you want a tack driving Mini, start with the Target Model and go from there. A Ranch Rifle will hit minute of goblin all day long, but it's unrealistic to expect target gun accuracy.

If you don't like the looks of the struts, have the barrel and action Cryo treated. I use 300 Below. I had the barrel on my new style Tactical Cryo treated because I don't like the rods either and it's a tac driver, even with a really hot barrel.
Be sure to inspect the rifle well before buying. Check to see that the scalops for the ring mounts are streight and cut to full depth and check the extractor plunger. Ruger's quality control expert is you after you have bought the rifle.

I've owned a Mini-14 since 1996 (or so) and maybe I'm fortunate, but mine seems as accurate as any semi-auto I've fired. Is it a tack-driver? Nope, but it wasn't designed to be one. The original concept was as a military carbine, but was beat out by Stoner's Jet Age rifle. For my purposes, it is a great little rifle. I like it. In fact, every time I have to clean my AR, I like my Mini even more.

I replaced the wooden stock with a folder, and stuck a flash compensator on the muzzle, but it is otherwise as it was manufactured.
