Are you dead set on the range requirement or the AR requirement ?

How far do you currently shoot ? What is the furthest you have ever shot ? 800 yards takes a metric sh!t ton of practice by the average person to just get close , Im not sure you could get there dollar wise using 5.56 because your going to need a mount and scope thats going to exceed your budget to get the adjust ability you would need to make it work . If you dont have to have a AR I would be looking at a .300 win mag bolt action . its a 1000+ yard capable rifle and more in your budget . OR you could just keep saving and step up to something a bit bigger in a autoloader like the 6.5 Creedmore , Nemo .300 win mag type AR or go 50 bmg . I tDont think you can really do any of those within your budget to be honest with you

Good luck on your build. +1 on the 6.5 Creedmore or .308 in an AR-10 platform.

If you want an AR platform and want to build it yourself with an 800+ yard range then look into LaRue uppers. They sell both parts and complete uppers lowers pretty much all the options. I have one of their complete 5.56 stealth uppers and it makes one ragged hole at 200 m with irons. Also have built an upper with their parts, also very very good.
They are a bit expensive but you definitely get what you pay for. For a 308 I would say an 18-20 inch barrel is all you really need. I'm not knocking the guy saying you need more. But the performance difference between 20 and 24 isn't as big as most people believe. And of you are wanting it for more then bench shooting a 20 or 18 inch make the rifle a lot more maneuverable.
All your option depend on what you want the rifle to do at the end of the day.

If $2000 is budget rifle, I would absolutely love to see your build when you go all out.

Two is fine, but if you DO HAVE the $2K for a build, it will open a lot of options.

But don't fret it too much. Do what 'feels' good. You can use 'knowledge' on the next two or three or four . . builds.

I would think that you have the budget for a great barrel / upper. I would also go for a 'matched upper/lower' such as AeroPrecisions or other good name.
Keep her tight with a good barrel...
