Default CFE 223 for the mini 14

I just picked up 8 lbs of CFE 223, it's a new powder and I have a reloading manual Nosler with current info on new powders. I was wondering if anyone had tried this powder. Been reading from the Hogdon web site checking load info.

I shoot H335, RL7, RL10, H4198, Varget, H4895, Varmit, AA2015. I just bought a lb of 8208 XBR for testing too.

I would have liked to get some of that powder, however powder of any kind is in pretty short supply to impossible to find here in S.W. Oregon. I can get IMR 4198 and IMR 3031. I bought 8 pounds of IMR 3031 for $160 in January and when I called a few days ago to find out if he had more he said yes but the price had gone up to $185.

I was able to get 8lbs for $148 out the door. I found 1 lb of Varmint and RL7 for $24 out the door here in Muncie, Indiana. I guess the don't reload as much as other regions. I even saw Tula ammo for $10/box.

Tri70. Go to the hodgdon website. They have reloading data for cfe 223. I use 27 grains for a 55 grain fmjbt. Good luck!

When I first started loading for 223 years ago I was using BLC(2), it's a good powder that produces high velocities at lower pressures but I've found it to leave a lot of carbon mess. The IMR 3031 seems to burn really clean but it does have a bit higher pressures. I like the Sierra load chart because it gives a best load for accuracy and for hunting, the Hodgdon manual is good for load pressure info. I'd love to try out some of the other powders but as I have said there is next to nothing available within our area at this time so basically what I can get a hold of that fits the calibers I'm using. Thankfully I had the foresight to get some pistol powders and primers during O's first term otherwise I'd be S.O.L. now.

I was able to get out and test this powder with 3 bullets; Nosler boat tail ballistic tip, flat base ballistic tip, and combined technology ballistic tip all 55 grain. The middle center is the boat tail bt, the upper right is the flat base bt and lower right is the combined tech. Shot @ 100 yds with target mini and 20 rd Promags.
