Default Another 556 or 223 thread

My new mini has 223 inscribed on it but the instruction manual I have for its serial number says its chambered for either. So which is it?

Normally, a barrel that has 5.56 can shoot either 5.56 or 223. I suggest contacting the manufacture of the barrel assy.

go with what is inscribed on the barrel. the manuals are written for many models and may not apply specifically in all respects to your gun. a decent gunsmith can ream a 223 out to 556. personally i would have it reamed to wylde chamber spec if i was going to do it. contacting ruger tech support with your serial number will tell you also. that is if it was never rebarreled...

Your mini 14 can shoot 223 or 5.56, the target model is the only model with a true 223 Rem chamber.

Listen to tri70. He knows what he's talking about!

As long as it's not a "target model", the chamber will accept .223 or 5.56.

Tri,

Is exactly correct. Standard Mini = 5.56 NATO Chamber. Target Model = 223 Remington Chamber. The 5.56 chamber has a longer lead than the 223 Remington chamber. So if you would shoot a 5.56 in a 223 Remington Chamber the Chamber Pressure well exceeds what it should. Not to mention military mil-spec ammo is hotter than commercial ammunition which adds to the problem.

Thanks guys! Kinda what I thought but I wanted to be sure. Didn't want to have to start buying both 556 for my AR and 223 for my mini. Now I can just get whats cheapest and run it through both.

It's a little deceptive, because while the

barrel isn't labeled "5.56", many Mini-14

variants, like the Ranch Model, are specifically

listed to shoot both.

^^^^^^^^^^
This would be why, when I got my

AR, I made sure it was labeled 5.56.

With today's ammo woes, the last thing you

want is limitations.
