*slightly* more than the AR, but I can keep up with most of them .. =)
I do have to disagree with Gundoc on one point, perhaps I was lucky, OR the stocks had improved on the 581's, the stock fit on mine is anything but sloppy.. again, maybe I just got a lucky stock . =)
I am guilty of being a mag grabber when not firing off the bench, and yes, with NON Ruger magazines it will cause feed issues.

Oh, on that note, Mag swaps are a tad slower if you are concerned with that, I typically use my new mag to detach the empty magazine.. there's a video on Rugers site demonstrating that. Basically you use the new mag to engage the mag release and push off the spent magazine then insert the new magazine. A bit akward until you get used to it..

What optic do you run and are you able to use your iron sights with them?

The optic on the pic is a small red dot, yes, you can use Iron (which is why my cheek rest is low) .. Now, using the standard optic mount and scope (which I have as well) you cannot use the irons.. UTG does make a mount that will allow the use of optic and iron.

Just need to range it, then aim as follows --

600 yds chest

400 yds knees
300 yds ankles
200 yds knees
100 yds navel
50 yds chest

One shot one kill.

The thing is that if you creep up on anybody that wide open it all just depends on what the maximum effective range of their weapon is.

Against a 45ACP you would not get withing 25 yards.

Against a S&W revolver you would not get within 50 yards.

Against an AK47 you would not get within 150 yards.

Against a Ruger mini you would not get within 300 yards.

Against an AR-15 or M-4 you would not get within 500 yards.

Against an M-14 you would not get within 600 yards.

And against any bolt action scoped rifle you would not get within 1000 yards.

I realize it may be bad form to pick the AR over the mini on a Mini 14 forum but it's not even close. I heard about the accuracy problems but I still chose the mini and it was simply economics. The mini was $400 at the time and AR was $800.

Being X-military, I am very familiar w the AR and it is a superior platform right out of the box. Look at any Midway USA or equivalent calalog and it will have 4-8 pages devoted to mini and 40 devoted to AR.

Caliber conversion : the AR top can be swapped out to convert to quite a variety of rounds from 458 down to meet any need - tactical, survival or hunting. It's simply a more versatile and modern platform. Piston or gas impingement both have their fans.

Barrel length is dependent upon what your going to use it for. I'd pay the $200 and get the 14" barrel as it handles like a dream but you'll lose velocity - no free lunch.

I posted the above on an AR or Mini 14 thread, mea culpa for the recycle but I'm lazy and the game is on. One point I failed to mention is minis are temperamental about mags w genuine Ruger preference while ARs function well w lowest bidder.
