For Christmas my son bought me a picatinny rail that mounts on the scope threads of my model 5801 mini 14 ranch rifle. ( my wife bought me an AR). Anyway HAS ANYONE TRIED TO PUT ONE ON?

The rear sight seems to be in the way. I don't want to remove the rear sight and will figure out a different way to mount a picatinny before I remove it.

Am I mistaken?

The rail may need to be clearanced for the rear sight. Some, like the NC Star rail, have a notch in them and multiple mounting points for the clamps to allow alignment above the rear sight.

If you don't like that one, look at the one made by GG&G or the Amega Ranges and Ultimak scout rails that replace the handguard.

The one he bought me was the ncstar through Wally world, and even with the notch the rear sight seems to me an obstruction..����

That is a problem with the NC and the UTG. Weigand makes one but they are about $50. You will probably have to cut the rail on the NC to miss your sight. The rail will still have to come off to remove the bolt. The Weigand will return to zero if you follow their installation instructions. Dont know whether the NC will. The scout rails look interesting because it leaves the action open and easy to remove the bolt but the Amega is about $150.

Decided to just Dutch the NC rail, and order an ATI strike force stock package.
This way I can mount my aimpoint and leave it on.
