The 5.56 x 45 does have a higher pressure, and a slightly longer longer chamber. It also uses a longer bullet than some of the civilian .223's. This can result in the bullet getting into the lands when chambered. There have been cases reported of a bullet that sticks in the bore when a cartridge is extracted, leaving you with an obstructed bore for next shot.

Bottom line- it is recommended by people that know a LOT more than I do that you do NOT shoot 5.56 NATO in a rifle chambered for .223 UNLESS THE MAKER OKS IT (like Ruger does in it's literature). There is also another chamber shape called the Wylde that can run both.

Yes, you CAN shoot .223 in a 5.56 NATO rifle.

Basically, if it says specifically .223 follow the rule of using only ammo that your gun is specifically chambered for.

I have a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle, Mod 5801, 1:9 RH twist. This rifle hates to shoot the 5.56 NATO spec rounds. You couldn't cover the groups with your whole hand spread out. However, in the .223 Remington spec, it loves the Winchester Ballistic tip 55gr, Winchester Varmint HV 45gr, Federal Gold Medal 55gr, and Fiocchi 55gr FMJ. Best groups in mine were with Winchester Ballistic 55gr, with a 1 inch group of five shots.
Of course your experience may differ.
