Yep...teach them young and you're good to go. My son is 11 and loves when i open the safe so he can demonstrate his safe handling skills by pulling out a pistol/rifle and safely clearing it. He's proud doing it and having so much fun he doesn't even realize that safe handling has become ingrained in him. The first thing he does even if I hand him a weapon I just cleared is check it again himself! And on the range, his finger is never on the trigger until he's on target...Brings a tear to my eye

And my youngest. Teach them safety now so I don't have to worry about what they would do. They know what a "real" firearm can do and respect them. Besides, it was awesome!!!

he is definitely, still too young to "let go off by himself in the back 40," YES. but if you're there with him, day in, day out for the next 4, 5, 6 years, then you KNOW what he is about.

THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES! INSTILL IT IN HIM! talk to him the whole time you and he are walkin from the house to the vehicle to load the firearms up, "you're doin a good job with your .22, son." "i noticed how you kept the barrel pointed in a safe direction the whole time." "make sure you always check the safety when someone hands you a firearm." "make sure you always drop the magazine and check the breech, too."

just, INSTILL it in him.
