Default Sunday afternoon ...

Alrighty so I got out to the range this afternoon with my stand and brought out my STAG AR15. The weather was nice and comfortable, a little on the humid side, overcast with no breeze. To start I got myself dialed in at 50yds first, then moved out to 75yds and finished the day at 100yds.

50 and 75yds - Federal 223 55gr

the top left target is where I started and I put 10rds at it. At first I started high and left but then I worked my way in. I managed to put 4 of the last 5rds within the center of the target. I hit within the target areas on turns #2 and #3 but then got sloppy on #4 at 75yds. I was able to get back within the target area on turn #5, again at 75yds.

100yds - Remington 223 55gr

Nothing to pat myself on the back about here but not terrible either I think. The 5rds in the first pic out of the target areas are not flyers, just poor shots by me. In the 2nd pic I managed to stay within the target area a little better but still nothing to brag about.

100yds - reloads from another shooter - 223 55gr
s5031867.jpg

Another shooter at the range had his own reloads and offered me a mag to try. At first I was high, as seen in the upper left target, but again I was able to work my way into the target area.

Of the 3 types of ammo I used today I like the reloads best - go figure . Between the Federal and the Remington I liked the Federal better. I felt I had more control on the follow up shots and they didn't feel to have as much recoil. Some more rounds down range and I'll get a better idea.

A couple things I took notice regarding my shooting,
1. Stock - My stock and cheek rest are probably set too far back. I feel like I have to strain forward to much in order to get a good sight with the scope. I'll need to look up the eye relief distance and then check it against the stock position. This won't be difficult to adjust if needed.
2. Scope - I might try setting the scope on a riser. Again this is a comfort issue as I feel I am straining to much to keep my eye down far enough to get a good sight.
3. Front grip - I like it and it is a very solid unit but I don't feel it is helping me trying to get accuracy at the range. I think a good sandbag would be more beneficial to improve accuracy.
4. Breathing - i don't know why but it sucked today, usually I don't have a problem with it. I just never felt relaxed and seemed too tense and wasn't able to get my breathing fully under control. This I'll have to consciously work on and improve.
5. Trigger - JD had advised me to get a RRA 2 Stage when I was putting the lower together and I have to give him props, I love it. It is very smooth and breaks crisply.

Overall I feel pretty good considering this is only the 2nd time I've got to shoot my AR15. Ultimately my goal is to be able put 5rds within the target center. I have all the confidence that the rifle is capable, now it's up to me to improve as a shooter.

Thanks for an excellent report.

Excellent and real Range Report Dog. Glad you like the trigger. Now with a little trigger time, you will be throwing daggers.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I've always enjoyed target shooting and really can't explain why I stopped shooting way back in my teens. I like the versatility of the AR and it really suits my mentality as well. Between my 5.56, .308 and the .458 I think I'll be able to keep myself busy for quite some time

Sorry I didn't include pics of the rifle. I have some posted here - http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/members/dog2000tj/albums/stag-arms-ar15/. After I make some of the adjustments I mentioned I'll take her out again and report back and include some updated pics.

I took off the Eotech because i wanted to see just how accurate she can shoot. M14's gave a great recommendation for a mil/mil Weaver scope in another thread and I have to say I like it a lot. Zeroing in at 1 range makes it very easy to adjust for the next or multiple ranges. Of course, I have many, many, many hours of study and practice with that as well.

The one thing about the day that bothered me most was the breathing. This is something that I have practiced and used in many aspects throughout my life. I should not have had that much trouble getting settled. Thinking about it more my best guess right now is my conditioning is piss poor. That too is something that is going to change.

Like I said, I have every confidence that this rifle will put 5rds in the target center so that is the goal I am going to go for.

Hi Dog

Perfect timing...for me anyways :-). I am getting started for my second/FIRST COMLETE build of an AR. It is a Top & Bottom RRA . A complete build ro scratch for the lower. Then I purchased the upper already built by RRA.

After many many many tireless hours and days * weeks of research, like you, I ended up ordering a /5.56 upper, Whylde chamber, in medium, mid-length stainless steel barrel with a 1/8 twist rate. I felt kind of different ( this was about 3 yrs ago ), as not many ppl were getting ths twist rate or even recommended it, but now, it is becoming very popular it seems. I guess the research paid off!

It has a chromed BCG, RRA gas block with pic rail on top, a Badger Ordnance charger. A RRA larger trigger guard ( winter ), std Mil-Spk trigger which I had tried with JP reduced weight ( more on that later ) springs, stoned and polished the hammer-trigger and disconnector ( without removing any metal), 5 poition sock and stadar hand guard.

Since then, I have installed a David Tubbs (Superior Shooting ) Chrome Silicon Buffer Spring, a Spikes Tactical H2 heavy carbine buffer, 1/2" rubber butt pad, Duracoated the stock and hand guard FDE by me- ( I have become a Certified Duracoat Specialist since then-but without my FFL, yet :- ). I have also replaced the A2 flash hider with a Micculek muzzle brake( very effective but NOISY ), Tubbs trigger spring kit m( the JP springs felt great and measured 4lb on my trigger scale, but ha ligt primer strikes and only ired 1 shot :-(. The Tubbs spring kit and the polishing only reduced the pul o 6 1/2 lbs, but it is consisant and reliable now. I am getting ready tomorrow to order a RRA varmint spring kit, which states that it will then be educedto 3.5-4lb pull. I picked up a set of MI front and rear foldng BUIS for only $99! which I could not pass up ( I really wanted the Troy ) as they were brand new, taken off a ordered rifle whch the guy then used as credit towards purchase of Red Dot of some sort, then at the same Pawn store, I also purchased ( used but not abused ) a Nikon 1.5-4x20 CQB scope for only.....$35!!! The least I have seen this sell for new, on sale..is $179!! Man I was happy to get ths..again, I really wanted a Eotech but...this will due for now. I am then going to order a Todd Jarret Mid length rail soon and install a B5 SOPMOD copy stock at 1/2 price.

This should round out this rifle for awhile. But...I just purchased a new lower receiver, ith the MagPul ACS mil-speck stock, along with a mil-sec buffer tube and will be getting the Tubbs springs and Spikes buffr again. I also purchased a ambi QD sling mount for th buffer tube, and have not decieded between a light weight 5.56 or a 5.45 caliber or a really nice 12" SBR. Just depends on the money situation in the next few months.

Good luck with yours, and I will pst som pics of mine soon.

TO All

Excuse the spelling and stuff on my last post the damn keyboard is acting up and nt working right...it is not the batteries...? Anyways, on my first rifle above, the RRA wit 1/8 twist barrel, I have since acquired a 6.5 - 20 x 50mm AO scope but have not spent as much time as I would like to at the range. I have been able to get around 1.25-1.5" groups at 100 yrds, but am really hoping for better than that. I need buy some really good...but expensive...match ammo. For the 1/8 twist it looks like 68 or 69 grain Black Hills should be the best to try frs. Any suggestion out there for match ammo on a 1/8 twist barrell? Would be appreciated
