Suggestions at the Range
Can anyone suggest some good ideas for practice at the range with a AR. What do you guys practice at the range? How far, I start at 36 yards then 50 up to 100. Should I practice with my iron sights more than my scope?

I personally don't own an AR yet but for my firearms that aren't "range toys" I practice how I intend to use them. Tell us what you want to use it for and you'll get more detailed answers :). If it's a home defense gun, practice shouldering it and getting off 2-3 center mass hits at 10 yards or so. If you hunt with it, get paper targets of the animal and practice kill shots at the min and max range you'd hunt from. Practice with the scope if it's what you'll b looking at your target with. Many purposes for a firearm, you probably bought your AR with one n mind so train for it. If it's just a plinker, drop some 2 liter bottles and pizza boxes at random distances and have fun :)

If you want to use a scope, use the iron sights at 50 yards once

to familiarize yourself with them. Then stay with the scope.

Cuts down on ammo wasted sighting in the scope repeatedly.

Range toys?? Not sure what you mean by that I don't treat my guns as "toys".

Some optics don't work so well at close range or in low light conditions; maybe you could practice using the irons in those conditions, JIC.

Thanks I'm good with the iron sights up to 50 yards, need glasses beyond, 51 year old eyes don't help.

Do you intend to hunt, OP?

I don't have an AR and am by no means an expert, but I was always taught to learn to zero and shoot your irons first out to 100 yrds. Nothing feels better than grouping on irons at that distance. Also helpful when your scope breaks/fails/etc. The challenge is fun.

Most people with AR's (and similar guns) at the local range where I shoot practice seeing how far their empty brass will eject. It seems that the more intrusive they can be and the more people they can hit with their flinging empty brass, the better.

I have a 3x9 scope on mine. I like to shoot at 50 and 100 yards. Further than that, the glass is not good enough to see.

Sometimes I like to do a half mag dump. :D
