Spreading the gun gospel

A friend I work with once told me that she was afraid of guns because she didn't know how to use them, so we agreed that in the summer (Souther hemisphere summer, that is) I'd teach her how to shoot. Her only condition was that she wanted to teach me to ride a bicycle (I hate those things, horses are much better), we're doing that on Sunday.

Today I took a few guns to the office, we went over basic safety rules and range etiquette and after work we headed down to my shooting club. I brought a Smith & Wesson 617, a 9mm M&P, a ParaOrdnance P14-45 and my lovely vintage Bersa 23. She liked the Bersa best, because it had the grip that best fit her small hands and because "it looks like a secret agent gun" (her words), followed by the 617 (which had larger rubber grips, and was a bit too heavy with its 6" barrell, a nice model 63 would have been perfect...).

She tried them all, and after some warming up and coaching on sight picture and correct grip she shot some pretty decent groups. I was quite impressed with her double action revolver work (below is a picture of her first group with the 617).

She shot 100 rounds of .22, around 50 9mm and a few .45s (my Para was just too large for her hands, she didn't mind the recoil so much). We started slow, after an hour or so she was doing controlled pairs and failure to stop drills with the M&P. I honestly think she could be quite good if she got into shooting sports.

Great job!! Funny CA, I was thinking the same thing. A cute girl with a gun...as long as she's not mean, it's a good combo.

Rebecca, she's from Atlanta (GA), a true southern belle. NGO management might not pay much, but I can't complain about the company.
