We are way back in on the property with no problem of any thing bad happening. We walk the creeks here and shoot all kinds of stuff. Nothing flat in Ky and most creeks have a major hill or mountain right behind them that is at least 200' to 2,000' high. Are your backstops that high? If not then you may be the one who is unsafe. Shoot 10,000 rds a year and have been shooting for 46 years. Taught lots of people to shoot. No problems of any kind yet.
