Savage 10 FCP-SR: The Good and the Bad

Traded off my springfield loaded and got a Savage 10 FCP-SR and a Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70. but this is about the savage.

The FCP-SR comes with a 20MOA cant scope rail, accustoc, accutrigger (which i really like), and a paddle release 10 round inline detachachable box magazine. barrel is a lightweight heavy barrel. i know it seems wierd but the metal doesnt feel like a regular steel barrel. the barrel is 24" threaded 5/8-24 and is 1:10 twist.

barrls are easily changed out by the end user with about the same skill level needed to change an AR15 barrel. s[pecial tools and headspacing gages can be purchased from savage for the job. this makes it a very long lived cheap to rebarrel bolt action rifle system.

the scope rail was not loctited or torqued. after doing so i mounted a leupold 4.5-14x50 mk4 scope using steel leupold medium height tactical rings.

winds left to right 4-5mph with gusts to 8.
temp 47 degrees
humidity 51%
ammo leftover 168 grn sierra bthp over 45grains w748. i didnt do a very good job case prep on this batch found out part way through loading i forgot to lock the die ring down.

also used 147 grain fmj milsurp. i used this for a basic sight in and getting on paper. this shoot was the last of my surplus ammo.

first up the sight in.

below was done at 100yards after a quick bore sight. with the 147 grain it was holding decent 1.5 moa groups. my old m1a was shooting 3 inches at this distance same ammo.

took it out to 200 yards first two shots in this group was just me yanking the trigger. im not the best scope shooter but im working on it. next 3 were hitting right at .6 inches. i didnt bother getting an exact windage zero due to the gusty conditions.

my initial impressions on shooting is i absolutely LOVE this rifle!! next weekend im going to give it another go with a bit better ammo. but there is one issue with the rifle.

the firing pin spring seems a little weak. it had some real issues setting off hard military style primers. some i had to double strike to set them off.

one odd thing i noted after running 20 rounds through the gun fairly quickly, the barrel was barely warm. granted the temperature was cool outside but i wasnt firing THAT slow

im going to give savage a call next week and see if they have a slightly stronger spring i can get.

savage is definately producing some very very accurate production rifles. when i bought my M1A the Savage 10 FCP-SR is the rifle i really wanted but it didnt exist at the time. im happy i went with this over the cz 550 ucs.

i currently have the paperwork submitted for a Surefire FA762K suppressor and have one of their muzzlebrake adapters on order. reports on both of these to follow when they arrive or get approved by the batfe.

thanks :) its a very good rifle. the rings shown arent the leupold rings i put on it before shooting.

i like the stock but im not crazy about the color. digicam brown isnt my thing but its only offered with that stock :( im prolly gonna end up having the stock duracoated a different color.

I Recently purchased this same rifle and scoped it with a Falcon Menace FFP 4-14x44. I was hoping to get it zeroed but the weather has been bad and too windy, so will have to wait until it warms up. Attached is a photo

Congrats!! they are damn fine rifles. Be sure to blue loctite and torque down the integral scope base it doesnt come properly mounted from the factory. The firing pins are also sometimes set too shallow to reliably ignite harder primers.

Since this post ive swapped out the leupold for a nightforce nxs front focal 14x scope with .25 moa adjustments

I also learned it wasnt the spring but too shallow firing pin. Since thefiring pin is adjustable its a fairly easy fix.

I changed scopes on this rifle to a Leupold 8-25x50 and the link to see this rifle with the new scope is: www.michelldixon.com/images/Savage308.jpg

And this is a link to a 10 shot group at 100 yards from the prone postion using HSM 178 grain match ammo.

I know there is a way to post the pics without the link, but I forgot what it is...sorry.

The target photo is upside down and the shot group was about 3 inches low at 100 yards which means it should be dead on at 300 yards. I'm very happy with this rifle.

since i made that post i totally disassembled mine remounted the barrel re-headspaced it put on a new barrel nut properly torqued everything down (savage had mine extremely over torqued. new bolt.

im getting right at 1.5 inch 10 shot groups at 300yds with sierra 168 matchkings. hornady 175's are coming in at 3 inch groups at 300yds for the same bullets your using.

here is mine as it sits now. im running a nightforce nxs F1 with a surefire fa762k suppressor

Savage 10 FCP- SR

I just picked one of these rifles up today with a nikon m308 scope on it for $700 and a couple of AR mags. It looks brandy new; I mean the mag well isn't even scratched up. Question tho: does anyone know if these take the same mags as the ruger gun site .308, and also where is the best price on mags for this rifle? I have the STD 10rd box, but I'd like to get a couple more and also a flush 4 rounder for deer season. Any help is much appreciated.

they are the same as the metal ruger mags. the plastic ones will not work with the savage. accurate mag is the maker of these. http://store.accurate-mag.com/308winchester762x51mmboxmagazine.aspx

they are NOT cheap by any stretch. you can get 5 round mags so if your restricted to 4 you will need to still make a block from a chunk of wood. prolly best to just do that with the 10 rounder instead of buying a 5.
