Range Report - S&W 629 3" barrel Deluxe Talo Edition
Just a short time ago I asked http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/f16/44-magnum-snubbie-31028/
Well, I decided on the S&W 629 Talo edition with a 3" barrel and I made a good choice. I was worried that the recoil was going to be extreme but its actually not bad. I shot it today, a 150 rounds worth the first 130 all double action. I figure in a self-defense situation I won't be cocking a hammer.
Attachment 18803
First I fired 50 rounds of 44 Magnum Magtech 240gr. SJSP and the recoil was not that bad at all, color me surprised. Then I went through 50 rounds of 200gr. 44 SPL CCI Blazer (very very mild). Then I shot 30 rounds of the carry load I pick for this gun, Fiocchi Extrema 240 Hornady XTP hollow points. Honestly, I could not tell the difference between these and the Magtech loads. Finally, just for stupidity sake I shot 20rds or Corbon 300gr. penetrator loads. Those were quite snappy, but still managable in SA.
The group below is the Fiocchi Extrema loads at 10 yards (sorry for the cell pic). I threw two shots away.

P.S. thanks for the help in chosing my new piece!

Nice, very nice!
I'm surprised with the lack of recoil.
Maybe you should try some of BillyBob44's hand rolled loads called "Atom Bomb"!

Excellent! I'm glad you like it.

Thanks and I was surprised too.
I think it is the larger grips filling my the palm of my hand and the 40oz weight.

No doubt that 40 oz. frame made a lot of difference. Along with my 329PD, I also have a 629 Classic with 6" barrel, an S&W PC 629 Hunter Plus, a Ruger Bisley 44 Mag., a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Mag. and a Ruger Vaquero 44 Mag.
Needless to say I like 44 Magnums...
That new Talo of yours will serve you well for a lifetime.

Mark F, how does your scandium model handle the hotter loads, above 260gr?
BTW, your ported 6" is great, was that a performance center upgrade?

My 329PD is brutal to handle with Cor Bon 300gr. Even 240's have quite a hot snap to them. Magnum 500 (padded backstrap) grips really helps absorb the recoil. My 629 Classic is a PC upgrade, complete with custom trigger action.
My 329PD is my "Macho Buster" for those guys who think 44's are woosie. I have yet to see anyone fire 6 consecutive rounds of Buffalo Bore 305gr. hard-cast ammo. Even "if" someone is stupid enough to make 6 rounds... they'll be in agony for a month.
God Bless 44 Magnums.

Love your 629 classic, how long did it take for Smith to do the work? I'd like an action
job on my new talo.

That made me laugh.
I have a Redhawk with wood grips that I use Buffalo Bore's 340gr. +P+
load for the same reason. It has a recoil that is controlable for someone
familar with a 44 magnum. But someone that has never fired anything
over a 9mm is in for a surprise:

It took about 6 weeks to get it back. It's certainly worth the wait time, not to mention it increases the value of the gun.

I'm also surprised by the lack of recoil. I have a ball shooting my 44 but I'm still learning how to control it. I don't think the long barrel helps. Nice shooting!
