Here is a range report on my latest acquisition, the Springfield M1A I bought this week:
Rifle: Springfield M-1A
Ammo: Federal 150 grain 7.62 x 51
Range: 100 Yards
Sights: Standard M-1A Iron Sights
My first 6 rounds confirmed my suspicions that this “pre-owned” rifle had never been fired. The rear sight was cranked all the way down, and my first shots were all way low. I ran though another 6 rounds to get the elevation dialed in at 100 yards.
I then ran 10 rounds at Target 1, getting used to the rifle.
The I shot last 8 rounds at Target 2. Believe it or not the three dead center shots on Target 2 were from my last three rounds.
On stripping the rifle down for cleaning after this first shoot, it was even more apparent that this rifle has had no use prior to this range trip.
This M-1A is a VERY fun shoot! To all of those of you who advised that I would love this rifle - You were RIGHT!

Looks like you got yourself a hell of a good deal on a very good shooting rifle.
Nice report!

That's some good shootin' Tx. Now get yourself some 168 gr. match and you'll really see it start to shine.
All that rifle is going to want to do is to eat ammo.
Don't field strip your rifle (take it out of the stock) any more than necessary and that's about every 500 rounds or maybe twice a year or even less if it is bedded. Go on line to Sadlak Industries and order a set of gas piston & gas plug cleaning drills. You will need to clean the carbon out of the piston and plug periodically. |

Nice! Another satisfied M14 owner.
Get some good grease. The oprod channel on the side of the receiver, the bolt roller, the bolt roller cutout on the oprod, a smear inside the oprod guide, and some grease on the bolt lugs should do you fine. Maybe a smear on the underside of the chamber end of the bbl if it looks like the oprod rubs it. You can use a cutdown .45ACP case and pack it with grease to grease the bolt roller if you don't want to try it by hand or buy the $10 tool.
Make a witness mark on the gas plug where it threads in to the gas cylinder so that you get it torqued down the same every time, unless you have an inch lb torque wrench that will hit 125-150 inchs lbs. The torque has an impact on accuracy, so play around with it and see how your groups look. 120 inch lbs is the recommended min.
Now that the sickness has taken effect, start making room for your second M14. Get a spare USGI extractor (M1 Garand will work, too) or two and a spare USGI hammer if yours is the cast SAI hammer.
A Sadlak NM spring guide and a set of Superior Shooting systems chrome silicon springs and you are set. |

Great shooting from a great rifle TX! Very reliable and deadly accurate stick with either iron sites or scope. Great fun to shoot too! Congrats on your new stick.
