Range Day

Taking my 629 S@W 44 mag to the range today! Want to shoot mags and specials! Already bought some mags! What is a good 44special load that I can practice with?? Also, is plugs and range rental muffs adequate ear protection?? Experiences rather than opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

I use plugs mostly when shooting rifles & plinking handguns. For magnum sixguns I like muffs. Is it adequate? Has been for me. I've lost most high pitch sounds but think that is from years of trucks & twisting wrenches in high noise areas.

Are you talking handloads or factory for the 44 Special?

Yes!! Factory 44special rounds! I'm not doing my own loads yet. And I plan on wearing the plugs AND the muffs!! I hear you can never over protect , especially with the Magnum!!

The report of a .44 magnum can cause serious hearing damage. The best idea due to sound cycles is to use both plugs and muffs. For light target loads try the .44 S&W Russian which is used by "Cowboy" shooters. :)

I can't help you with factory loads, sorry.

I use ear muffs w mag n light loads w/o incident. Much of my shooting has been indoors which raises hell - you can almost "feel" the repercussion.

However, if you are a youngster and still have all your higher range intact - there is nothing w doubling up.

In my youth, I w never even consider 44 special but as I get older, I like them ! :D and if I can find some w a decent price tag, I intend on trying the 44 Russian out.

Range day went well!! Couldn't find any 44 special ammo! But I did pop my cherry with 240g mag shells!! She shoots great!! I'm not a world class shot!! But I managed to shoot some pretty tight circles from around 30 feet!! Some I'm confident that whatever I might need it for will do the job!! -:)

Well I consider this range report incomplete until we get some pictures.

Sorry didn't get any photos!! I was a virgin caught up in the moment! But love the gun and the power it displays! Only problem is finding Ammo in and these parts! After Visiting 4 different gun and ammo stores I finally found a box of 44S! That taught me not to use my carry/defense ammo on the gun range!
