Mother's day at the range?
Part 1.

So my wife tells me to get out of the house today and she will spend mother's day with our daughter. Well, OK.

So I hit the rifle range with my shooting partner who was coming up to my neck of the woods to see his family for Mom's day. He has a new Ruger Gunsite rifle that he has not fired, and his Rem700 has been getting all dressed up over the last few months but is now done.

It started off as a laminated stock 700 Varmint in .223, as seen on the right side of this picture from our squirrel hunting trip last year.

It shot OK, but he was never thrilled with it. It was a 1/12. So a few months ago he sent it away and had a Pac-Nor 19" medium heavy 1/7 installed. He also had it chambered for .223 Ackley Improved. It came back about a month ago.

Then, he ordered a McRee's Precision Stock at SHOT and it arrived last week.

A Magpul grip, some new Picatinny bases, some temporary glass (IOR 6X42), and off to the range. We lapped and aligned the rings (IOR steel) at the range today, and they turned out nice.

He needed to make some .223AI brass, so we fired off a couple of hundred rds of Rem .223. Presto! Instant AI brass.

Part 2.

He also brought along his new .308 Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle. Great shooting little rifle.

The rear sight could use a little more windage & elevation adjustment, but it was still on steel at 300 yards. He has one of the new XS Sight systems Picatinny rails with integral rear sight on order and plans on an Aimpoint.

For anyone thinking about getting one I highly recommend it. I will be getting one.

I brought along my Savage 12FVSS in .223 because I wanted to work on the 200 & 300 yard comeups. It has a Meopta 4-16x44, and shoots the Winchester 45gr factory loads like a laser beam.

It was shooting fine and getting the dope was a matter of minutes. After trying the Mcrees Precision stock on his 700, I may get one for my Savage.

I also brought along my Anschutz 54 Sporter in .22lr, mainly because I wanted to chronograph the CCI Velocitor out of it, but also because I rarely shoot it. The Velocitors were running about 1350fps. Tried some Stingers and they pegged in around 1550, but most surprisingly they shot very well. The Stingers turned in just under 2" groups (5 shot) at 100yards.

A little drizzly, a lot windy, and not very crowded. A great day at the range, fo sho.

Thanks, Tex!! I love that rifle, and it really shoots. My crappy cell phone pic does no justice to that stock, either. Great palmswell, too. I also have the original sights, a spare 5rd and a spare 10rd mag and all the original paperwork.
