Default M&P 9mm and Remington 870

I don't have to work until the 4th, my better half is away visiting her folks and I finally got through all the end of the year parties. I'm taking a couple of "Francisco days" to do whatever tickles my fancy.

Today I started with a nice workout and some fights in the morning, had a quick lunch and a short nap and headed down to the range.

I took my S&W M&P 9mm and my Remington 870. I started out with the M&P, doing some failure to stop drills at 20 meters as fast as I could (which is a rather unimpressive speed!). It's an ugly gun, but it works. And since I don't find it too aesthetically appealing I don't mind carrying it in the sweaty summer months, banging it around when playing in the woods, etc. I still need to work on the trigger, I missed two of the headshots because I jerked it.

I shot two boxes of Magtech 124 grain FMJ. No malfunctions, although the slide failed to lock open after the last shot a couple of times. I think I might be pressing the slide release with one of my thumbs.

Next came my 870. I don't know how I managed to live without a pump action shotgun for so long. I'm in love with it, it's the basic Express Magnum model, nothing special, but it just works so well and it's so much fun to shoot!

I wanted to pattern some 00 buckshot loads and also practice reloading, one of the range instructors teaches shotgun techniques to law enforcement agencies and he was very helpful. I tried the ammo at 5 and 10 meters, the target's head was soon replaced by a big comforting hole. I love this thing.

My M&P:

Target at 20 meters:

Close up of the centre (notice my grouping is low and to the left, need to work on that trigger!!):

My beloved shotgun (the only thing I added is a shell holder, I love the standard rifle sights):

First two shots at 10 meters:

As a grand finale to this day dedicated to celebrate the wonder that is me, I'm making a steak dinner and ordering a new Leatherman tool.

Awesome! Lucky guy! I've tried to get out to the range for over a month and it still hasn't happened. Just one thing I have to say... you love the factory sights? WHAT SIGHTS?! I mounted a red dot on mine and a cabela's front night sight (11 bucks man!), works awesome. My only problem is that I've thrown so much crap on my 870 that it now weights 12lbs without shells. Time for a diet.

EDIT: Happy Birthday!

Mine came with rifle sights, and I like them a lot. Especially for shooting slugs. I might change the front sight, though (I'm thinking about either fibre optic or tritium).

Oh, it's not my birthday, I just happened to have the day all to myself with nobody else to worry about.

Sounds like a good time and looks like some nice shooting. I'm planning on doing a little myself this weekend if weather permits.

Nice shooting there Francis, you have two firearms that I can't say one bad thing about, me likes them, and BTW, that target is toast.

How was that steak dinner?

Nice shootin bro.
But me, I think the MPs are great looking.
I took my MP45 to the range last weekend. No targets to show off, I shot the 25 & 50yd silhouettes.

Also shot the 10/22 for the first time after a Bear trigger rework. Sweet.

nice shooting.

and i might add, i don't think you need new sights for your shotty. that target has no face anymore! what would new sights do to improve that?

seriously, you already know those rifle sights do you fine for slugs and for close range shotshells, well, aiming isn't exactly a huge factor. even if you miss by a little you still do massive damage.

no need to spend more money to change what already works right?

heck i just have the front bead sight on my 870 and i can shoot 4-5 inch moving targets (clays) out of the sky at 25-40 meters away all day long.

Excellent report, Francisco. That is dead bad guy.

If you want to put some color to the front sight, buy some jig head paint and put a dab on it. Works with both the rifle sight and the bead.
