Only because they are cheaper to shoot will move up to a 5.56 or 7.62 down the road

But if I come across something with an amazing price I might have to pick it up looking in the 5 to 6 hundred range

Well I would get a ruger 10/22 .22lr... They run about $200 and it will never give you a problem. It was my first and I fell in love with it. You can soup it up how ever you want. The only reason why I wouldnt get an ar-15 type .22 is that if something breaks or you need mags/parts, they are harder to find and cost more.

I would agree... You probably don't want to start with a 5 or 6 hundred dollar pretend assault weapon... especially since your reason for the small caliber is cost of shooting... the other 400 bucks will go a long way buying 5.56 or 7.62, etc. You might really take a long hard look at that 10/22... Great solid platform and you could use the left over money to get something like an SKS... Also a good solid platform... Then you have BOTH a plinker and a "man's gun"...

ruger 10/22 are awesome. Consider a drop in system for them, to make them look like a black rifle.
61711 - TAPCO Ruger 10/22 Intrafuse .920 Rifle Stock Black
3-1023439 - Promag Archangel Ruger 10/22 Stock Kit Black
