Likely he did this either because it was a lifelong dream, or his neighborhood is degrading into criminal activity and he cannot afford to move on his income. Either way, he will probably never return to the shooting sports. An opportunity for a new shooter to love our sport, join the NRA and vote for political supporters is permanently lost.
I agree, Greg. 100%. This was an opportunity lost. I would absolutely have helped out the elder gentleman even though it isn't my job and I came to the range to shoot.

OP, maybe if you're in a situation like that again, you might be able to gain an honest supporter of our cause.

It was time for a new signature. This is what you get.

I hope I don't come across as selfish but this is why I have been to exactly one range in my life. I am luck enough to live in a fairly rural area and can drive 5 min to a family farm to shoot. That said if someone wants to go and learn to shoot I will take them but the idea of multiple new shooters terrifies me.

I may not have been clear enough in the original post but I think some here aren't hearing what I'm saying. I didn't leave the gentleman hanging, as I did show him the loading of the magazine, but I then went to the rangemaster - so that the gentleman could get some help/aid/instruction. I don't pretend to know all that much about firearms myself though I certainly don't have problems showing people what I may know. My point was that if the gentleman was truly a beginner and was using range equipment, it might be a bit presumptuous of me to show him how things should be done.

A little more detail: He did ask for help with the magazine but when I asked him if he had ever handled a firearm before (he said no) he got rather short in his reply and said that "they" (apparently the range personnel) know that already. So I went for the rangemaster. I didn't leave the gentleman hanging.

Myself I would of probably spent my time with that old man teaching him the basics. As long as it was productive and upped his awareness for safety. We have to be willing to pass on our knowledge to those willing to learn from it.

Mikemc,, just read your above... I'm not criticizing you at all, it was your situation and you handles it as you saw fit. GOOD CALL.. I spoke on how I tend to handle somewhat similar situations I've been in.

I'm not criticizing you either. And I understood what you did to help him, which honestly is probably a lot more than most people would have done if put in the situation.

I pay $100 a year for access to two ranges the one nearest me is very informal just the way I like it. A group of good old boys never meaning no harm...lol I forgot the rest of the words!
Just a good time being around like minded people and I hope it never changes.
