I'm not following your logic. How does an engineer get "sold short" when I say he seems to me to be a stereotype of the breed? Many fit the stereotype and some do not. I fail to see how anybody would be "sold short".

One could say I am a stereotypical "gun nut" or a stereotypical "hillbilly". I would not take offense at either one because I generally fit that stereotype, nor do I feel that I am somehow "sold short".

Nice bit of writing. Kept looking for me, though ... A liberal who loves to shoot.

Write it up yourself! At least that way you couldn't be accused of being anti-liberal gun ownership.

That has always fascinated me but I embrace them when I find them. One's definition of "liberal" could and probably has been a thread all un to itself. Based on your definition I may be a liberal too in the sense of Libertarian. Found a lot of people in Oregon who love to shoot and have liberal tendencies. Fascinating community we are a part of!

I have a friend who is a self-proclaimed Socialist who is a gun nut. Interestingly he is a German Jew who lost several family members in the Nazi death camps. Very intelligent as well, he is a PHD physicist (as is his wife). I don't think he fits any stereotypes though.

Vikingdad it would be an interesting conversation to find out where a Socialist feels their right to own guns comes from.

Oh and I may have to say "mea maxima culpa". I guess I have created a stereotype of PHDs having worked with many that goes like this "there is a fine line between brilliance and insanity".

OK I got the thread back on the stereotype track!

He is an interesting guy to talk to, although I have never been to the range with him. He openly admits that Socialism and gun ownership are at odds with one another but will happily tell you he nonetheless he believes in it.

Nice guy though, despite his shortcomings.

A Socialist wants to own all the guns in the world. And then he will rule wisely.

The scariest people are the ones with no sense of humor, especially ones that can't poke fun of "themselves".

Very funny repost, Vincine.

And stereotypes exist because people WANT to be them or they don't know how to be anything else because that is what they are surrounded by and that is what appeals to them. Take any stereotype there is and there are an untold number of people out there trying to be the quinticential "whatever".
