Default how thick

I wonted to make some steel targets and was wondering how thick of steel I need to stop high powered ammo. Like 30-06 or a 12 gauge sluges

I can tell you that I have shot holes through the webs of railroad rails with my .30-06.
.30-06 will punch holes in 7/8" mild steel plate at 100 yards.

Therefore, it will depend upon the alloy that you select to make your targets.

I used a 1/4" steel cold roll for targets so far it's stopped up to a 357 mag but 30-30 and 7mm rem mag blow straight through it. 12 gauge foster slug with throw them around pretty good but so far hasn't gone threw, I've shot my 30-30 soft point at a 1" piece of steel it really didn't do much but dent it a little bit but the 7mm rem mag takes divits out. If I were you I would just put the money and get some of the harden steel that can actually take a 30-06 round.

Old oil field tank farms were built from armor plate salvaged from Battle Ships. The plates are 1 " thick and they stop the 50 BMG rounds dead.

Composition of materials should be considered, also.

Some steels are "softer" than others.

The 44 Remington Magnum, fired through

an 18" carbine barrel, will go through an

(empty, of course) LP tank

and make a huge dent in the next one.

I would try making one 1/2" steel target.

Try it, then go thicker or thinner from there.

Shotgun blasts will generally deflect from

light steel, but 30.06 and larger rifle rounds, well,

I think Durangokid's on the right track...

Its not how thick you need to worry about its the hard ness. The hard ness of steel is called brinell. You can get steel thick enuf to stop the round but it is still going to make a big crater and eventually weaken it enuf to penetrate.
