Finally had time to take my Savage 93R17 out and have some fun today.
Aside from it being a drizzle by the time i got to my shooting field things went pretty good. I set my Dura - Seal targets up and drove back to 100yards. Every shot hit just where I wanted it to and in all honesty, it got a little boring.

So I packed up and drove back to the 200 yard point, this is where I decided I'd try the Sweet 17s main feature out. With out counting the clicks I spun the elevation dial to 200 and only used my ballistics program to give the windage. After getting that set, every shot was hitting the gopher I intended it to hit and I once again got bored after a couple magazines. So yet again I moved back.

At the 300 yard mark I started to have a little trouble getting my windage so figured I'd just try to burn through as much of the crumby stuff (Winchesters .20 HP), with in 50 rounds I had three split cases and called it quits. Thinking I had missed all the shots with the good stuff (Hornadys 17grn V-max) I went to grab my swingers and leave. That's when I seen this shiny little bullet sticking out of the middle gopher. Then I seem two more lodged in the third one......turns out I hit them but there was to little force to swing the targets.

Sorry Towboat, would of posted t all at once but my iPod messed up and would scroll with the text. But at 200 yards I did a lot better then I ever thought I would of.

the 17HMR can be very accurate. i have had some decent groups at 200 yards with mine in the past. biggest problem with the longer distances is the wind. those lightweight 17 caliber bullets don't like wind at all.

I haven't shot for groups past 100 yards, and that was during sight in. I will agree with you on the windage bit though. I had a 5m/hr breeze when shooting the gophers targets and at 100yards it already accumulated to 2.04 MOA of drift.

That is awesome!! You proved what I had suspected at 300 yards, not any energy left. VG shooting though. Do you find a major difference in poi out to 150 yards between 17 and 20gr???

There's actually a fairly larger difference. The 20grain bullets weirdly seemed to hit about 2 inches higher and three inches to the right. I was thinking that since they where a little heavier, they would drop a little more. I also found out that my gun is defiantly not a fan of the 20grainers.

Kaido, try out the Hornady 20 gr XTP ammo and see how they work out for you. i have really good results with them in my Savage M93r17 rifle.

I think I might give those a try next time I'm in the gun shop. Wasn't a ware Hornady made 20grainers. I still want to try some of the FMJ rounds I've heard of but yet to see in person.

When I started w/ my Marlin 917V it hated 17gr. All I shot were Hornady 20gr, until I started looking at the 6 boxes of 17gr and decided to try them again. It was a total transformation from the 1st few experiences. Everything I've tried shoots well now. The best are 20gr gamepoint CCI and 17gr Hornady V-Max.
