Default Data from reloads for .44 rem mag and .338 win mag

Ok, we got out to the range with the chronograph to see how they hold up.

Firearm used:
S&W 629 Classic .44 rem mag with 6 1/2" barrel.

Load information:
Hornady 180 grain HP-XTP (part# 44050) ($17.29 for 100)
18.0 Grains IMR 800-X powder (18.99 for 1 pound. 380 loads)
Winchester WLP primers (3.29 for 100)
Full Crimp on Case after Load
Est. FPS: 1650
Actual FPS: 1779, 1751, 1782 Average 1770

These came out a lot faster then I expected. According to Hornady's online ballistic calculator, this load equals 1252 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. I have another 50 of these loads and will double check the ballistics. Not too shabby for 25.6 cents per bullet.

Firearm used:
Winchester Model 70 .338 Winchester Magnum, 24" Barrel.

Load information:
Hornady 200 grain SST (part# 33102)
73.9 grains HODGDON H4350 Powder
Winchester WLM primers
Est. FPS: 3000
Actual FPS: 3017, 3013 Average 3015

These did slightly faster than the specs in the book. The ballistic calculator shows 4037 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. All of these rounds have been gauged to the rifle itself and have .020 inches clearance +/- .005 inches.

The same round out of my dad's ruger .338 win mag (his has a muzzle break on it) come out of the muzzle at 3076, and 3065 (average 3070.5).

Now I just need to get more practice.
